Music for all

Recently two of our Board members went to a Music Australia event around Music education. Heres a small write up from one of those members, Hannah Durack of Good Wolf

“Creativity is one of the most important 21st-century skills – and music education is where it begins.”

Yesterday, Music Australia hosted a fantastic briefing on important work being done to strengthen music education in schools.

The session unpacked insights from recent research into the state of music education in public primary schools. Dr Anita Collins presented an update on Music Education: Right from the Start – a collaborative national initiative led by The Tony Foundation, focused on building quality, ongoing, sequential music education in all primary schools.

What stood out most is how powerful music education is both in and beyond the classroom:
• It supports student wellbeing
• Builds self-regulation
• Contributes to happier, more settled learning environments

It was fantastic to see GoodWolf client, The Tony Foundation – represented by Emily Albert, whose leadership and advocacy in this space continue to be both thoughtful and impactful. Emily spoke about the broader significance of music education, reminding us that when music education thrives, the music industry thrives. Emily also spoke about the vast numbers of young people who are missing out on the joy, confidence, and connection that music education brings. Access remains inequitable. This is a systems issue, not simply a program gap. Too often, those who stand to benefit the most are the ones missing out.

Call to action:
If you want to show your support for quality music education for all Australian children, get behind the push to include a dedicated Creative Arts Education pillar in the next National Cultural Policy.
